Central Market in Downtown Lancaster City

The country's oldest farmers' market in the heart of Amish country occupies a beautiful 120 year old red brick building chock-full of local character. After 275 years of existence our market remains essentially unchanged: local farmers and producers selling fresh, wholesome foods to friends and neighbors.

When you shop at Lancaster Central Market at Penn Square in the heart of Lancaster City, you become a part of a living history. This is America's oldest farmers' market building. Since the 1730's farmers have been bringing meats and vegetables to the site for sale to local residents. Many of today's standholders have been "on market" since the early 1900's.

Central Market, also known as Lancaster Central Market, is a historic public market located in Penn Square, in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Until 2005, the market was the oldest municipally-operated market in the United States.

Plan Your Visit

Lancaster Central Market is open year-round on Tuesdays and Fridays from 6AM to 4PM and on Saturdays 6AM to 2PM. Market is closed on holidays. In these cases market is held the day before the holiday.

Lancaster Central Market was recently listed as one of the 10 best fresh markets in the world by CNN Go, the global and travel website of the international cable news network.

A public marketplace was deeded on this site in 1730 as part of the settlement of Lancaster. The marketplace was officially chartered by King George II on May 1, 1742, officially designating Lancaster as a market town. The Central Market occupies a portion of the original marketplace, with the first permanent building erected in 1757.
